I've been cooking TEKLAMO (a dynamo package for Tekla Structures 19).
It's a personal project (Coded at night when ever I could spare some sleep), so it's going a little slow.

Right now it can create:
Beams, PolyBeams, ContourPlates
Connections, CutPlanes, Fittings.
(All the stuff I needed it to do in the first place)

I'd like to:
add Rebars, Cut Part with Polygon, Cut Part with Part
improve reading capability from Tekla,
test solid creation methods for dynamo..

I'll be presenting it in dynamo.istanbul user group event to see if there's enough interest to
share the package as is,
wait a few months to add the planned nodes and share
or don't bother at all..Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18282799305114892979noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1074353334357779128.post-10884390536046243382016-05-23T14:11:00.000+03:002016-05-23T14:18:25.070+03:00istanbul Dynamo User Group

In 2011 - 2012 I've done a tremendous Room Data Sheet Api work for Muscat International Airport Terminal Building.
The client was asking for floor + ceiling Plans, all interior elevations and isometric view of the rooms. I also had to integrate some external data to the ones I was getting from Revit.
Pretty straight forward. The thing was it had 4000+ rooms in tens of Revit Files!

That's when I've first dived in the coding stuff. There was a huge man-hours of repetitive work ahead and any thing I could automate no matter what percentage was a true win.

In 2011 neither myself nor the Revit API was what it is today :) But I did OK..

Recently demons of "Very Important Never Accessed Folders" let me find my original code..

Despite all the things it was doing, it didn't get anything from Linked Documents.

So I've played around the concepts Jeremy inspired:

Yes, of course there is a workaround. There always is.

It is just a question of how much effort it takes, and how efficient it turns out to be.

In this case, you can simply collect the rooms from the linked document and

add some other criterion to select the ones you want.

Now you may ask:

I'm not sure why Formwork quantification is such a big deal in Turkey and not so much in other countries. Any how that request also found me a couple of weeks ago.
As an Architect, I'm more of a "do it in Revit with modeling" kinda guy than a script/add-in spitting some values. So I've made a Dynamo script that creates Formwork.

Here's a brief video showing my workflow in Revit and Dynamo.

I've also coded some companion add-ins. Ranging from basic stuff that writes the Formwork area sums back to elements to an add-in I call "Everything's a Formwork if you're brave enough."
I'll be coding one this week that will be nesting the Formworks to XY plane, joining/splitting Formworks, marking etc. for fabrication.

It's good enough for the task in my hands as it is but I'll try to refine it further.
(Like porting all to a Revit add-in)
So still a work in progress project.
Any advice/recommendation from Structure People for guiding an Architect to the right direction is highly appreciated..Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18282799305114892979noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1074353334357779128.post-50713870504356967912015-05-21T14:10:00.000+03:002015-05-21T14:10:07.344+03:00Revit Rebar Tool

Wow! Getting a comment from my personal Hero feels great and is very encouraging!
Thank you Mr. Tammik!

Here's some backstory:
I'm a Senior Architect and (by choice) a BIM manager. Throughout my career I usually worked for the General Contractors and mostly on large-scale projects. Things are a little bit different when the project is around or above 500.000 m² (5mil ft²) and being able to do BIM boils down to numbers.
Number of Revit licenses and people you could get from the management.

It's a little bit harsh but let me explain:
To be able to do BIM you need people to collaborate based on their professional and modeling skills. In a large-scale project you can't solely rely on the Contract to get the resources you need!
You have to prove it. And prove it fast!
The contract may well say "all drawings should be prepared with the BIM authoring tool."
But there's always an ongoing negotiation both with the client and inbetween GC Joit Venture.
And these negotiations are led by not technical or process minded people but by numbers minded people.

Every GC probably has a Cad-House in a country with low labor costs. Before you even know an innocent whisper comes to your ear "Let's do BIM models for coordination and drawings in Cad".

Normally I shouldn't mind this. But in real life it means "We'll give you less resource, expect all your deliverables like MTOs, QTOs, RDSs etc. and guess what! you have to create all the views/sheets and export them for Cad-guys to annotate! Of course you have to track all DWGs and changes/variations"

Let's put it this way:
By abstraction I can utilize anyone in our process. I also divide my M3 and M2 files(3d and 2d models) according to BS 1192:2007.
So with a few hours of training anyone can be producing sheets without the risk of ruining M3s.

For a project I roughly need:
10-15% top modelers. (Complex geometries, materials/types according to specks, families etc)
35-45% trade people decent modelers (Be it DD or CD, what these people do really counts. Also their manhours cost the most. I put most of my efforts (and tools) into helping them do their job and model according to our Standards Methods and Procedures so they can further collaborate among each other.)
45-55% M2s (View/Sheet Production and drafting.)

So asking for annotation in Cad really means loosing M2 guys (mostly drafters) and instead trade people doing inefficient tasks.

In one occasion similar to above, Architects were modeling structural concrete and exporting for Senior Structural Drafters and Engineers. These drafters had 10-30 years of experience and were really good at what they were doing! But they only knew how to draw 2d in AutoCad.

For BS 1192:2007 authority reasons and for efficiency I had to get them involved in BIM. Their managing Engineer wasn't very fond of the idea so the talks stuck at how they had special tools and methods to draw and calculate rebars!

I knew I couldn't make them model rebars in Revit in a short period of time. Even if I could they probably wouldn't want to! (It's quite hard to push people out of their comfort zones)

I found myself, an architect, trying to understand their rebar tools and procedure.
At the end I did a better tool for Revit with the API :)
It does a lot of stuff under the hood. Mostly mimicking their procedure so they could start using it immediately.
Uses shapes and formulas from BS 8666:2005.
I feed the shapes as family so if you need a new one you don't have to update the code.

The video is from a project we've used the add-in for production. Does not show the whole workflow or every aspect of the tool. If there will be interest I can capture more videos.

And those guys and their department are using Revit now..Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18282799305114892979noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1074353334357779128.post-19890999650158070162015-05-18T10:17:00.004+03:002015-05-18T10:18:53.935+03:00Sharing Data through Revit, Navisworks, 3ds Max and Tableau

I'm getting a lot of questions lately about a workflow I've created three years ago.
I'll try to answer all..

I was the BIM Manager of Bechtel Enka J.V. and we were building the 650.000 m² Terminal Building of Muscat OMAN. We've used Revit as our BIM authoring tool and heavily utilized Navisworks for soft / hard clash detection and scheduling.

I had highly talented 3d artists but still it was neither easy nor fast enough to update the construction animations as the schedules change.

I've started playing with tools looking for a solution. I've figured out when you link Revit models into 3ds Max, element names contain the Id numbers. So I've exported the timeliner data with the Ids from Navisworks and created animations with maxscript. (Balusters were the only exception and I was getting their data from the adjacent railing.)

As an architect with a very limited coding skill it was hard. There were all that SDK documents but they did mean very little for the average Joe (me). There were great guys blogging and helping like Jeremy Tammik and Saikat Bhattacharya but the problem was getting into coding under the pressure of solving your real world problem. With my award winning persistence I've created my plug-in.

...
A year before that:
It was funny how we were talking about all the possibilities BIM brings and yet I couldn't concatenate (join) a few text parameters into one parameter. That's when I've started learning C# and Revit Api. Later I've started getting online lessons from Harry Mattison. Wow I became the master of my craft again!(Not necessarily a master programmer)

...
2015 the year of visual coding: DYNAMO
With all the computers around us, I believe everyone should know how to tell them do stuff.
But especially in AEC when you need coding you already need results in a tight schedule. This year Dynamo changed it all for the masses. With a visual coding tool and a great community you start getting results before you start diving in.
Look at Marcello Sgambelluri's blog and you're doing things!

...
Update on my tool:
I rarely use the timeliner data in 3ds Max. But I use it for Material Take-Offs.
I extract MTOs from Revit and combine it with the timeliner data.
Watch the video and please tell me what you think..Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18282799305114892979noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1074353334357779128.post-89227179203198453452015-05-07T09:22:00.000+03:002015-05-07T09:22:31.106+03:00Strandbeest back to Netherlands

It feels great to be mentioned in such a great session by Dieter in Netherlands, heart of BIM and homeland of the artist Theo Jansen!
It's been working continually for a few months and continuously for more than a month logging the sensors' data in one minute intervals.
The system works great and it looks like it won't need more modification / adjustment.
So it was time to build the casings. I've modeled the casings in Revit and sent them to Laser Cutting.

There will be 7 pods connected as a mesh network via Zigbee protocol (Xbee S2B Pro):

There will be 5 satellite Pods:
-Arduino Micro
*Luminosity Sensor
*High Accuracy Temperature Sensor
*Temperature / Humidity / (Heat Index) Sensor

One Gas Pod: (There's only One Gas Pod because these measurements are close to homogeneous and the sensors are expensive to get to Turkey )
-Arduino Uno
*CO2 sensor
*Barometer
*Dust Sensor

One Logger Pod:
-Arduino Yun
*Realtime Clock to sync Pods
*Micro SD Card Reader / Internet (Xively)

On the software side I did a little bit more than planning:

With every new BIM project more disciplines and project members are entering information to the Model(s).
At some point as well as people entering information, we'll need more things to report about themself (and their surroundings) into the BIM.

Imagine a "Structural Element" reporting the current forces on it or a "Light Transmission Coefficient sensing Window" begging to be cleaned :)

This may be all possible with IoT The Internet of Things. IoT is the interconnection of uniquely identifiable embedded computing like devices with the existing Internet infrastructure. These microcontrollers and the sensors connected to them are relatively cheap and highly available items.

To examine the idea further I've built an Occupancy Comfort Sensors Pod.

It was encouraging to see a lot of people building such devices and sharing their knowledge.
In fact OCS and / or a Weather Station seems to be the first project anyone getting into Arduino builds.

Although the idea was not achieving a device with a pro-grade accuracy, I've done my best to do so.
I'd like to thank everyone sharing their knowledge of calibrating the sensors I've used and friends lending me serious toys to calibrate to.

BIM OCS senses (from top left to bottom) Light, Carbon Dioxide, Dust, Sound Level, Temperature, Humidity, Heat Index and Barometric Pressure.

BIM OCS has a wireless connection to the internet and uploads the sensors' data to Xively in every cycle.
Xively (formerly known as Cosm and Pachube) offers an Internet of Things (IoT) platform as a service.

You can check the readings of BIM OCS here. (The BIM OCS may not be online all the time as I'm disconnecting the prototype to do modifications from time to time.)

Now I'll be working on getting this information into BIM. I've emailed Ramtin Attar for more information about Autodesk Projects Dasher a month ago (140627) but couldn't get a return.

So I'll be focusing my efforts on the good ol' Revit and its Analysis Visualization Framework (AVF)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18282799305114892979noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1074353334357779128.post-79204696698950592062014-06-16T01:06:00.000+03:002014-06-16T01:07:40.132+03:00Power of Formula Driven Geometry: SingularityAlthough Revit does not like zero length elements, it allows in Adaptive Components.
But if you use an Adaptive as a reference when the length is zero the reference breaks for good.

Even if you use it as a reference in its own family the reference breaks for zero length but recovers for other lengths.
I guess when the Adaptive is zero length Revit says "Ok! It's broken. I'm not gonna make it a big deal and wait for another value."

When I was experimenting on this I've found it quite difficult to achieve an Initial Singularity.
(Positive and Negative values are usually pretty easy to get.)

Using Formulas or an external referrer (like dynamo / API) for referencing overcomes this.

Here is my Formula Driven Snub Dodecahedron (wikipedia):

Snub Dodecahedron has one data entry parameter, two visibility parameters and five informing parameters.

When e has a positive value:

If we enter zero for the value of e, Revit warns us about the identical instances in the same place:

-You can use it in an evil or good way right now. Put a Comments label in it, adjust a date and place it on views in a work shared environment saying..
Good: "Hey don't forget the party!"
Evil: "Yes! That deadline was yesterday!

J:
-Yes, for Evil. I have also been thinking about doing some kind of project planning in Revit.
For example if you make "Comment Objects" that a project manager or lead designer, with very little Revit experience, can place on drawings and fill in with date and actions they can be scheduled. This gives a clear overview of what needs to be done, by whom, when and if actions have been completed or not.
It would be very useful to have Date and Time available as parameters in Revit so that actions approaching deadlines could be shown in ever brighter colours as the moment of death or glory approaches...
The deadline family has 2 data entry parameters:
DateA and DateB. Family expects DateA to be earlier than DateB by default.

It has 2 check parameters:
DateAcheck and DateBcheck. These parameters show how the family interprets the dates we've entered.

And there's a txtMessage parameter with 6 possible outcomes.

While I was looking for a solution I've found Julian Day in wikipedia:
Julian Day is the continuous count of days since the beginning of the Julian Period used primarily by astronomers.

A count for each Date means I can subtract one from other to find the days in between. This would be easier than I've thought!

I also didn't want to have 6 entry parameters(y/m/d) for two dates so I've made 2 integer parameters which I parse into y/m/d and correct with DRV(drive) parameters and concatenate back into check parameters.

DateA (Integer Parameter)

year(at least 1 digit)month(2 digits)day(2 digits). So the earliest date you can enter is 10101.
(If you have a deadline before that let me know! :)

Parsing (Probably called something else!) done by getting the correct decimal places.

AyearParse = rounddown(DateA / 10000)
AmonthParse = rounddown(DateA / 100) - (AyearParse * 100)
AdayParse = DateA - (AyearParse * 10000) - (AmonthParse * 100)

I've used the same day / month / yearDRV(drive) parameters from the Revit Calendar.

Julian Day Number

You must compute first the number of years (y) and months (m) since March 1 −4800 (March 1, 4801 BC):

So be it!
Aa = rounddown((14 - AmonthDRV) / 12)
Ay = AyearDRV + 4800 - Aa
Am = AmonthDRV + (12 * Aa) - 3

AJulianDay = AdayDRV + rounddown(((153 * Am) + 2) / 5) + (365 * Ay) + rounddown(Ay / 4) - rounddown(Ay / 100) + rounddown(Ay / 400) - 32045

I've repeated the above steps for DateB.
BJulianDay - AJulianDay is the Droid we are looking for!

Usually I nest formulas when I believe they're working OK to reduce the number of parameters. For readability I didn't do it in this family.

Enjoy!.. Thanks for reading..Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18282799305114892979noreply@blogger.com2
